Position Details
Job Title: Environmental Officer
Reporting to: Senior Environmental Officer
Work Schedule: 63 Days On / 21 Days Off
Duration: Permanent
Location: Kahama, Shinyanga, Tanzania
Key Responsibilities
- Implement monitoring and measurement programs, including data collection and sampling for water quality, air quality, noise, vibration, and meteorological data.
- Manage the site water balance model, advising relevant departments on water balance issues and actions.
- Maintain and update environmental systems such as ISOMETRIX with monitoring, inspections, training, incidents, audits, and compliance data.
- Conduct quarterly water sampling and microbiological tests for potable water quality assurance.
- Ensure proper use and upkeep of the environmental laboratory and maintain equipment calibration.
- Participate in ISO14001 (Environmental Management System) implementation and compliance activities.
- Compile and QA/QC monthly HSEC/Sustainability data from departments, ensuring accurate reporting.
- Implement Biodiversity and Closure Planning Management Standards and monitor compliance with mine closure requirements.
- Update and maintain the site chemical register and conduct hazardous material inspections.
- Supervise and oversee activities of field technicians and waste management operators.
- Prepare and submit environmental monitoring reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual).
- Drive continual improvement through follow-up of environmental actions across departments.
- Utilize GIS tools for data analysis and reporting of monitoring information.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Management from a recognized university.
- Professional registration with NEMC as an Environmental Expert (EIA and Auditing) is an added advantage.
- Valid Tanzanian Driver’s License is mandatory.
Experience and Competencies
- Minimum 2 years of experience in environmental management in the extractive industry.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 certified environmental management systems.
- Strong data management skills with high attention to detail.
- Proficiency in computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience with GIS and specialized environmental management software is a plus.
- Understanding of Tanzanian environmental legislation and mining industry regulations.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in remote environments and manage tasks independently.
